We started by discussing things that we would want to make this flag. We wanted to be different and stand out either by it change or being interactive. We thought of using different materials to just printing it out on fabric and how this could be used with processes to create something visually amazing.
We also discussed what flags are for and how they represent something either history or a symbol. We decided we have some kind of inspiration or theme for the flag.
I showed sam this wood grain print which I loved and he showed me this marbling technique he had recently discovered. These seemed to work well together because of the visual results being patterns which are nature related.
Therefore we discussed how these could be brought together in a kind of concept.
We looked at a range of themes that could be the topic of the flag. After deliberation we thought of instead of applying one of these techniques or visuals to another topic why don't we combine them to create a nature based patterned visual.
Ideas:
marbling wood with a pattern stencil
marbling on paper using inspiration from nature
creating different patterns from different nature aspects to create a grid of different visuals
We thought that wood would give us a limited chance to experiment due to cost and scale so paper could be a starting base to play around with to test and try as we hadn't done it before.
With wood we thought we could vinyl a pattern down and marble around it, removing it at the end to reveal the true wood colour.
Another idea was that we could have a floor flag which would be different to every other flags positioning and use sections of wood put together to create the rectangular shape.
We looked at sourcing wood for this idea.
