CoP: Initial Ideas

In my tutorial with Amber and Simon I discussed the idea of doing my CoP publication around inspiration as i've realised this year that the main source of my inspiration, ideas and general creativity is sourced from things around me. The main way I log and capture these is through taking photos. Therefore I wanted to create something that brought this to life and showed the documentation of what inspires me. Amber and Simon gave some good suggestions and said to be creative with the subject matter. They mentioned a few names such as Martin Parr which I then went at looked at for ideas:

I decided to research into interesting or different ways to display images rather than just a printed book.

Quite alot of them were impractical for this project as they were ways of displaying them in the home. I wanted something that was going to in capture the idea of what the COP publication was about. Therefore I decided to brainstorm what I was trying to achieve picking out key words to draw from to choose an appropriate format.

I came across this idea of polaroid tiles. I'd seen something similar before when in amsterdam and it was really nice graphic prints on ceramic tiles. This was something I had started to look into myself but the techniques online weren't possible for home crafting.

There was a link I found after researching into again which gave a simple demo into placing images onto tiles.

 http://www.brit.co/two-ways-to-create-custom-ceramic-tiles/

There were also sites that would print them for you however this was expensive and would take time.

I started sourcing some tiles that I would be able to use to do it myself using the method I had found.

I found quite a few in home base for a decent price. The initial ones I found were 150mm by 150mm which would be to big I feel for what I want to do. However I came across a rough edged set which were 100mm by 100mm which was much more appropriate. There were also some coloured ones which I'd be interested to see in person.

I went down to ceramics in uni to ask for some advice as I wanted to no more about the glue used 'mod podge' in the instructions. The tutor told me about lazortran paper instead as he'd never heard of that. This was paper that you laser printed onto and then could slip onto the tile and bake on. He gave me a sheet of information of how to use it on different surfaces and advised me to speak to the tech guys.

I therefore spoke to them and got some advise. I realised as well that lazortran was similar to decal paper which i'd used before and still had some. This gives a clear image so white tiles would be most appropriate to get full view of the image.

I started searching through my pictures that I had taken to draw out a selection to pick from to put on the tiles.

After going through I realised i'd chosen close to 200 pictures. This I will obviously cut down to select  a few to show my inspiration. I may choose to do different sets in a series which show different experiences or types of inspiration depending on total cost.

The tiles are appropriate to my concept of inspiration as the tiles will tell a story through snap shots. They can be mixed together and turned into variations of mosaics to form new ideas and inspiration.
